Getting Down and Dirty with Archaeology


Dig This: Excavating History

Grades 3-12
Supplemental Materials SC Curriculum Standards
Students will be introduced to the science of archaeology and practice the steps taken to retrieve, investigate, and mend artifacts. Students will analyze photographs, artifacts, and oral history accounts to reconstruct the uses of a building that dates to the 18th century. Additional interactive activities will include excavating artifacts from a seeded pit, analyzing artifacts to determine their material and original function, and learning how archaeologists mend pieces together to form a recognizable object. Careful attention will be given to the value of preserving archaeological resources for the future. (2-3 hours)
