December 2nd Webinar – Charles Drayton and the Scottish Enlightenment

December 2, 2021

charleston sc history events december 2021 virtual webinar

Explore Charles Drayton’s (1743-1820) education at the University of Edinburgh Medical School during the Scottish Enlightenment on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 5 pm EST.

Oxford University’s Balliol College, was one of the thousands of students who traversed cross continents to earn an M.D. in the rapidly growing Scottish capital, hoping to solidify a medical career back home. At the empirical height of the Scottish Enlightenment, Drayton and his peers received an education centered on the basic principles of enlightened thought, in which common sense, trial and error, and experience as the prime source of knowledge were ideas enshrined both in the lecture hall and beyond.

Join 2021 Drayton Hall Wood Family Fellow, Olivia Stankus, as she explores Drayton’s late eighteenth-century education at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Focusing on 1767, Olivia will shepherd through Drayton’s academic schedule, extracurriculars, and intellectual participation in the Scottish Enlightenment. Learn more about the courses and ideas taught by former leading figures of Scottish medicine, including: chemists William Cullen and Joseph Black, Royal Botanist John Hope, and famed surgeon Alexander Monro.
