Join Drayton Hall Curator Amber Satterthwaite at 10 am on Saturday, March 19, 2022 for our guided outdoor walk, Outside Drayton Hall’s Main House.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Drayton Hall was a busy place all year round. There were many outbuildings, and enslaved laborers performed agricultural work, tended animals, maintained carriages and boats, and completed the constant upkeep of the landscape, fences, and structures. Records kept by Charles Drayton reveal details about the people who performed these vital tasks and provide a glimpse of what daily life looked like on the landscape surrounding the main house.

On this guided walk, Curator Amber Satterthwaite will introduce you to some of the individuals who labored on this landscape and inside the main house, providing anecdotes from primary documents that inform us about their families and other community connections. You’ll learn about some of the many structures that once stood on the plantation and how they were utilized by enslaved people with a wide range of skills, knowledge, and expertise, and we’ll explore the ways in which life was disrupted for Drayton Hall’s enslaved residents each year when the Drayton family moved to their seasonal residence on Sullivan’s Island.

$45 non-member/ $40 member per person.
