Marsh Madness

Students learn about the ecosystem of a salt marsh through a series of interactive activities. During a guided walk through the marsh, educators introduce students to the historical relationship between humans and the environment at Drayton Hall. They discover how American Indians enslaved people and colonists used the marsh for it's natural resources. Students learn the importance of conservation and recycling to the future of our environment.
Where Nature and Culture Intersect:
Man's Use of the Lowcountry Environment
This innovative, standards-based, cross-disciplinary education program explores over 300 years of occupation, settlement, and use of the site and surrounding region.
Students will learn about the importance of preserving the environment - they will explore how the natural environment, geography, and historical events have shaped human activity, and in turn, how the environment has been impacted by humans.
Students will gain an understanding of the contributions made over time by those who settled in the Lowcountry and how those people interacted with one another, their environment, and local ecosystems.
Students will learn how relationships between colonists and enslaved people changed over time.
The program also incorporates sience and mathematics in order to ensure a truly cross-curricular learning experience.
