Marsh Madness

For students in K4 through 3rd grade. Students learn about the interrelationships among plants, animals, and their environment through a series of hands-on activities.

They walk through Drayton Hall's woods and its tidal marsh, once the site of Drayton Hall’s rice fields, and record observations in field guides.

They discover and learn to interpret the importance of marshes and forests to humans and animals over time and into the future.

Where Nature and Culture Intersect:

Man's Use of the Lowcountry Environment

Supplemental Materials SC Curriculum Standards
This innovative, standards-based, cross-disciplinary education program explores over 300 years of occupation, settlement, and use of the site and surrounding region.

Students will learn about the importance of preserving the environment - they will explore how the natural environment, geography, and historical events have shaped human activity, and in turn, how the environment has been impacted by humans.

Students will gain an understanding of the contributions made over time by those who settled in the Lowcountry and how those people interacted with one another, their environment, and local ecosystems.

They will examine the historical relationship between colonists, enslaved people from Africa, and Native Americans, how these relationships changed over time, and how those changes were manifested in the landscape.

The new program will also incorporate mathematics in order to ensure a truly cross-curricular learning experience.
