Help Fund Preservation Projects

Constructed by unknown hands, but preserved by yours.

Drayton Hall has weathered the past twelve months better than we had predicted thanks to friends who have continued to support our work through membership and special gifts and who continue to recommend Drayton Hall to their friends and family as they’ve traveled through Charleston.

Despite all this good news, funding for 2010 is a concern.

Many of our projects are funded in part by grants, and in the past year many grant-making organizations have suspended their programs entirely or made serious cuts due to the losses they’ve faced with their endowments.

This is where you come in. By making a special, year-end gift today, you can help make two particularly important projects a reality.

Check out the pictures to the right and our short video to learn more.

Just imagine the difference a gift from you can make!

Carter Hudgins, director of preservation, and Craig Tuminaro, director of museum interpretation, outline the problems at the portico and the changes to take place at the African-American cemetery.

Project Specifics

Here's what we'll be doing:

Now that we know that the 18th-century African-American cemetery was much larger than we had previously thought, we’ll move the parking area across the driveway and install a memorial arch (artist's rendering shown above) and an interpretive panel to honor those who are buried here and share the discoveries we’ve made.

Here beneath the portico, cement has started to crumble, exposing rusted rebar. The bigger problem is the cement and rebar have gradually pulled the portico in three directions away from the house over the course of the last 90 years. Your gift will help us bring engineers to Drayton Hall to investigate this problem and figure out how to solve it.

Special Thank You Gift:
This one-of-a-kind hand colored photograph is part of a series by local artist Karen Vournakis. Thanks to her generosity, we are able to offer these as a thank you for gifts of $130 or more. Matted to fit an 8x10 frame, they are the perfect reminder of what makes Drayton Hall unique!
