Seven Generations of the Drayton Family

From the Colonial Period to Modern Day

Sixth Generation: 1915-1969

When Charles Henry Drayton died in 1915, he left equal shares of Drayton Hall to his wife, Eliza Meritt Drayton, and their three surviving children, Eliza, Charlotta, and Charles V. Young Eliza died in 1918, and her mother, the elder Eliza, died in 1926. At this point the property ownership passed jointly to Charlotta Drayton (1884-1969) and Charles Drayton V (1887-1940). Charlotta never married. In 1917, Charles V married Emily Beatty, and they had two sons, Charles Henry and Francis Beatty. When Charles V died, he left his share of the property to his two sons, but Charlotta assumed ownership responsibilities until her death.

Charlotta spent several weeks at a time at Drayton Hall, and the only modern conveniences she installed were a wood burning stove and an ice box in one of the smaller chambers in the raised basement.
