Description:
The magnolia grandiflora symbolizes beauty, nobility, perseverance and a love of nature. This example is modeled after a detail of the plaster ceiling in our great hall, an antebellum cast-plaster design of stars, magnolias, leaves, and branches around a massive center medallion dating back to sometime around 1850. Actually the third ceiling in that space, both of the earlier ceilings the first an ornate and grand carved plaster ceiling, the second a delicate arrangement of urns, garlands, and swags fell victim to structural problems. This elegant paperweight is one of a series of replica Drayton Hall elements being handcrafted by students from the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, SC, as part of an ongoing program with Drayton Hall. Here, students from the college have the opportunity to perfect their craft through the study of and hands-on interaction with rare examples of intact 18th-century craftsmanship in their original environment. As part of the process, the students take detailed measurements of historic elements and create molds; then, students and faculty hand-cast the designs, transforming them into decorative elements such as this. We are pleased to include the American College of the Building Arts in our collection of original works by local artists and artisans.
